Ladder 15 Happy Hour and LWL!

The past week has been action packed for PGWISE and its members! We hosted two sold-out Lattes with the Ladies events. Eight members got to meet with Kerri Pomykala of First Quality Baby Products on Monday, and another group met with Dr. Holly Koblish on Incyte on Thursday. More Lattes with the Ladies events are scheduled, but they fill up fast, so make sure you subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss out on these exciting opportunities!

Thursday night was also our Ladder 15 Happy Hour co-sponsored with the Penn Biotech Consulting Group, the Elizabeth Blackwell Society, and Women in Chemistry. Thanks to everyone who came out to the first PGWISE-sponsored social event of the year. After seeing the great turnout, safe to say it won’t be our last.

Finally, this Wednesday we are co-sponsoring the Gender Bias in Science Symposium with the Penn Biomedical Postdoctoral council. From 12-2 in the BRB Auditorium (421 Curie Blvd), come hear the discussion and engage in some Q&A. Light refreshments will be served.

Lattes with the Ladies and our upcoming Joint Graduate Association Happy Hour!

Our first installment of Lattes with the Ladies was a huge success! We want to extend our gratitude to Dr. Maria Tahamont for coming to speak to PGWISE members about what it is like to oversee and teach in the Biology Department at a small liberal arts college.

We also had out first C.V. writing workshop, in which Rosanne Lurie of careers services helped our members fine tune their C.Vs. for their NSF applications and gave us some pointers on crafting an NIH biosketch.

This week PGWISE and PSDG will be co-hosting Dr. Cathy Campbell, the president and CEO of CRDF global, a non-profit dedicated to facilitating science and technology transfer between the United States and countries that were formerly members of the Soviet Union. She will be discussing her role as a scientist and leader in the arena of science diplomacy, and the role of women in scientific leadership positions. Come by on October 16th from 12-2pm in the Smilow Center for Translational Research (floor 11 room 146) to share some lunch and ask Dr. Campbell your questions.

Remember to swing my Ladder 15 on Thursday for the Joint Graduate Association Happy Hour, co-hosted by PGWISE, the Elizabeth Blackwell Society, Women in Chemistry, and Penn Biotech Consulting Group, to snag free drink tickets and to network with other graduate students on campus. The happy hour is at Ladder 15 from 6-8pm on October 15th. We will be handing away 100 free drink tickets at the door, so come meet members from all of these graduate student organizations!

First GA Meeting of the Fall Semester!

Our first GA meeting of the fall semester saw a 25% boost in attendance, so thank you to everyone for coming out! We are especially excited to see first-year students and students from programs across campus!

Sydney gave a great overview of the three outreach projects we are currently starting, and the door is still wide open for volunteers.

There are three current opportunities, Science Mini Projects, Science Olympiad and the College Access Program. Get involved with Science Mini Projects to work with a local Philadelphia student on a small research project in your lab. Join Science Olympiad to coach students while they compete in a science competition at their school.  If you’re looking for more of a mentoring opportunity, get involved in the College Access Program, in which you’ll get to help local students navigate the college applications process. For more info on these programs, email Sydney at sydc@upenn.edu

We are also incredibly excited to announce Lattes with the Ladies, our flagship seminar series in which you can have coffee with leading women in academia, government, industry, science writing and more, in a small group setting (8 max). The events are first-come, first-serve, so pay attention to your inbox and don’t miss out!

If you missed the meeting and these programs sounds interesting to you, click here to see detailed notes of what was discussed. These are just a fraction of what PGWISE has in store! See you at the next meeting!

Our first meeting was a success. We had over 50 students come to hear about our outreach and career development programs. Actually so many people showed up that we ran out of forks and chairs!

Guest speakers Jay and Ciara also joined us to discuss their outreach program: Science Education Academy. The have several really awesome outreach opportunities, and we hope to continue working with them in the future!

We are really excited to start of the semester will all of our great events. Be sure to look out for us at Grad Fest on September 23rd. We will be handing out candy -- so come and check out our booth!

Volunteering at the Science Education Academy (SEA) Carnival.

The Science Eduction Academy (SEA) put on a great event on Saturday! Families came out to learn about DNA extraction, density, slime, sublimation and a ton of other exciting science topics. PGWISE members Sydney, Alexandra, Jamie, Sarah, Kate and Laura volunteered at booths with fun science demos for kids and their families. We are so excited to have Jay and Ciara come to talk at our first GA meeting about other ways we can be involved with SEA!

First podcast with Dr. Montserrat Anguera!

Stay tuned for the first edition of our podcast (WISE@penn). We will be interviewing Dr. Montserrat Anguera from the School of Veterinary Medicine. Her research focuses on the role of long, non-coding RNAs in development using random X-inactivation as a model system.
